Steven Stubblefield of Starlings, TN knows a little about destruction and the recovery process that is involved. Living in Hattiesburg Mississippi when hurricane Katrina rolled through, having more than $12,000 worth of damage to his home, he found recovery in the reconstruction. He spent three years helping others recover working for humanitarian organization Samaritan’s Purse and also The American Red Cross Hurricane Recovery program. Once instruments were replaced and hard drives were restored, he started writing and recording again, producing 2009’s “Under the Influence” and 2010’s “How Dark it is Before the Dawn”
Early 2011, Stubblefield relocated to Austin, Texas to revitalize his music career. He began writing and recording immediately and was joined by former Roadside Monuments band mate Bryan Robison on guitar. The pair began rehearsing as the writing and recording continued. Once the Bastrop fire broke out, he began to take notice, researching on the web. “I was appalled at some of the things I saw being said by people across the country. I just can’t believe people can be so coldhearted.”

“This unique approach to roots music requires a certain disregard for convention, so it’s not surprising to discover that the members of Starlings, TN used to be in a punk rock band.” - Meredith Ochs, All Things Considered (NPR)
